Discussion of the Design

The diameter of the practice hole is 3.5 inches. The common size for a hole on a golf course is 4.25 inches. Therefore, our smaller hole diameter helps you improve your putting accuracy. You are practicing with a smaller hole. Also, at 3.5 inches in diameter, two golf balls easily fit into the hole.

The bottom of the practice hole is made with a unique manufacturing process that gives gripping strength. This gripping strength helps keep the practice hole from sliding as balls contact the back of the hole.

The entry point on the ramp is designed to reduce the ball “hopping” as it enters the ramp.

The thickness of the practice hole in conjunction with the ramp angle ensures ball capture (it’s in the hole) with a properly paced putt. The pros say a properly paced putt should stop 12 to 18 inches beyond the hole if the putt is missed. Based on this information, our calculations indicate that the ideal speed of a golf ball entering the hole is around 3 feet per second. At a speed exceeding around 4 feet per second, the ball will likely skip over the hole. Additionally, the thickness of the practice hole adds to its strength and durability.

The Portable Practice Hole Story

We wanted a complementary product to go along with our 100% Pure Stroke® Putting Training Aid, so we invented the 100% Pure Stroke® Portable Practice Hole for use in your home or office.

We did some research and found other portable holes were made of flimsy plastic, were not durable, slid around when used and that the ball had a tendency to hop as it entered the hole. We set out to solve these problems.

We pretty much knew from the beginning that ½ inch thick industrial strength aluminum would be our raw material. This thickness would be required for strength, ramp angle and ball capture. We also knew that we wanted a smaller hole to help with practicing accuracy.

Before investing in the expensive raw materials, we made a prototype utilizing 3D printing technology. We tested this model and found that it slid as balls struck the back of the hole. We needed to solve this problem.

We investigated different types of coatings to apply to the bottom of the practice hole to provide gripping strength. We didn’t like any of those or the costs associated with them. That is when we decided to manufacture the gripping surface right into the portable hole itself. We tried several variations until we settled on the design.

Lastly, we added a final special coating for a little more durability and aesthetics.
